The size and weight of this is unbelievably light and small..
I've had it out and tried on the poncho.
It fits over a back pack and myself no problem.. I'm 5ft 8 with a60ltr pack..
Not tried it as a shelter yet.. but there are lots of tie out points that it shouldn't be too hard to pitch up something quickly in the rain..
I think this will stay in my back pack for future trips , it takes up no space and weights next to nothing...
For the Scottish Highlands I think this poncho is a necessity for the changeable weather......
I bought the rain poncho in blue for my husband. I previously purchased a camo-patterned one for myself, and it's one of my favourite pieces of gear. I walk in the forest every day and the poncho is always in my backpack. Now my husband has one—he knows how effective they are.
These ponchos are very lightweight and pack into a pocket-sized bundle. I appreciate the tape strap that can be fastened to keep the poncho closer to the body. It is roomy enough to cover a backpack, and the cut has made allowance for that. It is waterproof and resists heavy rain. There is some condensation, but the venting at the sides helps as they are fastened by widely-spaced snaps. There are tie-out tabs so it can be used as an emergency tarp, and I have strung mine over my mini hammock.
I have only one criticism: I wish the poncho was wider so it would cover my sleeve cuffs. As it is, some cuff is exposed and gets wet. I would be the first to buy an upgrade if this issue was fixed. Overall, though, I recommend this poncho. Its value and usefulness are unbeatable.
Ultralight, durable, and provides full coverage. The hood and waist snug down which is great. I'm 6-1 and the long fits me perfectly. My GF is 5-2 and the short hits her legs similar to mine. 100% satisfied with the purchase.
Including the stuff sack I weighed this in at 8.4 ounces, which is slightly higher than what they have listed, but much lighter than any jacket, pants and pack cover out there. Plus a poncho is much more practical on trail due to its ventilation – advice from someone with several thousand miles during 40 years of backpacking. I doubt if I would ever use it as a shelter, but for probably less than an ounce or two in extra tie-down loops and velcro, the ability to use it as an emergency shelter or tarp is nice to have. I also liked the belt strap to reduce wind effects, which I have not seen in other ponchos. This poncho is very well made and is a definite keeper. In response to some other reviewer’s complaints:
•,I am 6’-2”, 195#, and the length while suitable, could be a little longer for me.
•,I thought the width was fine, but I could see how some might want something wider for more arm protection.
•,Unless your head is the size of a basketball, the opening and hood are large enough.
•,A hat is not required, but my wide brim hat fit fine providing more face protection.
•,The lack of a brim to the hood is a good thing, as it would just make stuffing it more difficult.
•,I had no problem fitting the poncho in the stuff sack, by either folding it roughly then rolling it into a log, or just stuffing it in to the sack.
•,I had no problem with the Velcro attachment scratching my arms.
•,It did have a “fishy” smell to it after opening. Giving it a quick hand wash and air drying eliminated it.
•,A twist in the corner tie-down loops would make threading cord through them easier. Actually, I would incorporate the plastic corner clips with the tie-down loop to simplify fabrication.
Another piece of unsolicited advice. Ponchos are a little difficult to put on over a pack by yourself. So if you are a solo hiker, I suggest practicing before you actually need it.
This poncho is perfect. Came in very handy when out for an excursion in my local woods when it started to rain. Very lightweight and covered my 6’4” hight. Apart from wet footwear, the rest of me kept dry. Worth having.
